Space launch VR Experience: Virgin Orbit and Newquay spaceport

For this project Immersive Business were commissioned by Spaceport Cornwall and Virgin Orbit to create a VR experience for the Meta Quest 2 to showcase the first satellite launch from UK soil due to take place at the end of 2022. The brief was to create an educational immersive experience to be deployed into schools across the UK that followed the journey of Kernow sat a Cornish designed and built micro satellite from being loaded onto the rocket, up to space, back down to GoonHilly Earth station and eventually to show the user the impact the data collected from Kernow Sat will have on the marine life around Cornwall. Throughout the experience are holographic speeches from experts from across the space sector to provide insights into their respective professions and to give context to what the user is experiencing.

My Role in the Project

I started this role as an XR designer but was quickly promoted to design lead and was made responsible for overseeing the design team and coordinating with other specialism within the development team. My main responsibilities as design lead were to plan how the user will interact with the experience this can include devising mechanics for the programmers to implement, providing references and grey boxed block outs of scenes for the artists to expand on or creating assets and mechanics myself. My role also involved a lot of people management as I was responsible for allocating tasks within the team and ensuring all team members have the resources, they need to do their job in a timely manner and as such it was imperative that I have my finger on the pulse of the project at all times. I was also responsible for coordinating demos at various events throughout the year including at the 60th anniversary of GoonHilly, The national science museum and the Beyond conference in Cardiff.

Current Status of the Project

The projects release was set to coincide with the UKs first space launch from Spaceport Cornwall in Newquay. However after an anomaly prevented the Rocket from reaching orbit the decision was made to put the project on hold until further notice. In the meantime it has still been displayed at a number of events and continues to be used as an educational tool despite not being made available for public release
