Low poly cabin

This was my first foray into the world of immersive technologies and my first time experimenting with game engines.

This project started as a tutorial for the render you see at the top of the page, that I had found and followed on YouTube after starting to learn blender. Originally, I had no further plans for the project, however about 3 months later I returned to the model and using my better developed skills created a few more trees a low poly fire (see this project in the low poly index) Later I added motion to the camera to create a fly through animation of a forest scene (see video on the right). The project yet again lay dormant for a couple of months until, after a visit to a virtual reality exhibition in Derby, I was inspired to convert it from merely a 3d model to a full immersive virtual environment.

After a couple of tweaks, such as removing the fire to make it easier to port to VR, I was faced with the most important decision: which game engine to use. I was using a windows mixed reality headset and was able to find the most information about how to utilise this system within unity, so decided to use that. After the process of setting up the headset I began to move the model across from blender, which was a relatively painless process. After the model was successfully moved across to unity I set about creating a starry skyscape and suitable lighting before finally packaging the experience into a simple .exe application (as can be seen in the video on the left). Overall I am very happy with this project, however the project did show me the large amount of coding knowledge required to use unity which prompted me to move over to Unreal Engine 4 for subsequent projects.

Disclaimer- this model was created with the assistance of a tutorial. Thus, it may bear resemblance to other models but it was entirely created by myself.
